About the Institute

The Gaylord College Institute for Research and Training (IRT), founded in 2005, was conceived as an engine for research and training programs involving faculty students, and external constituencies of the college. The initial emphasis for the Institute is to address issues related to media and communities. IRT is funded through various grants through foundations and organizations such as the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation and the James S. and John L. Knight Foundation among others.

The Institute strives to encourage three types of activity:

  1. 1.Research programs that address pressing issues facing the discipline and the field that can best be addressed by research partnerships among academic scholars, professional analysts, and concerned citizens. The Institute couples research support with experts to clarify issues, collect data, analyze findings and develop strategies to find solutions

  2. 2.Training programs that bring information and expertise together with individuals who can implement solutions, improve professional practices, and improve the discipline, the field, and the society.

  3. 3.Extracurricular educational experiences for students, faculty, and members of Oklahoma communities through visiting professionals and scholars taking part in programs of the institute.
